Knights of Columbus 4th Degree, Major Sayward N. Hall General Assembly 340, was organized originally on March 5, 1958, as the Lime Rock Local Assembly No. 136. It included members of 4th Degree Knights from Rockland Council No. 136. On the 27th of April in 1966 the Assembly was renamed and recognized as a General rather than Local Assembly and this time included Council 3942 in Belfast, ME. The organization has long been an integral part of the church in Belfast with the meeting site being shared over time between in one of three church locations: St. Bernard’s in Rockland, Our Lady of Good Hope in Camden, and St. Francis of Assisi in Belfast. The Patriotic Degree, as it is often referred to, is led by a Faithful Navigator drawn from 4th Degree members in Councils 3942 and 136. In 1958 the Lime Rock Local Assembly was formed under the auspices of the Rev. George Goudreau and the Rev Charles Bennett.
When changed to a General Assembly it was renamed for Major Hall from Thomaston, ME, who was a graduate of the West Point Military Academy and served early in the Vietnam conflict as the commander of the 119th Aviation Company. He was wounded in a Viet Cong mortar attack on 7 February 1965 at Camp Holloway and passed away shortly thereafter in an Army hospital in the Philippines. He was Figure 47 The first officers of the Lime Rock Assembly taken October 13, 1957, in Waterville, ME awarded a Bronze Star for Valor, a Purple Heart, and an Air Medal (2nd Oak Leaf Cluster) for bravery. Sayward’s patriotic actions clearly had an immediate impact on the members of the Assembly and under the leadership of Faithful Navigator John B. Rapose decided to rename the organization and at the same time incorporate the individual 4th Degree Knights from the Council in Belfast. The council in Belfast was led by Grand Knight Eugene M. Murphy who not only assisted in the reorganization of Assembly but did so in a manner that led to him being honored with the Council’s annual award to a high school senior who attends St. Francis – The Eugene Murphy Scholarship.
